21st February 2020 ~ Inspirational Ideas; Hats!

Being part of WW&D I am always looking for new inspirational ideas that can be incorporated into designs so I am able to offer customers something unique.

I’m in love with tweed, I think that is fairly obvious, and designing eclectic garments is part of the fun. Let’s face it, who doesn’t love a bit of fringing. It’s almost a throw back to times past when I was a younger girl and just loved rocking my faux leather jacket with its fringing across the back. I guess it’s these fond memories that surface when I initially start thinking of new styles.

For me colour is so important, and the bolder the colour the better it is! It’s such fun to mix and match different hues. However, I will look for fabrics that coordinate well but I so definitely want a bright, noticeable and funky look. So for me the garment needs to stand out and make its presence known, light a fire and spark interest, plus no-one else will have anything like it!

It was these thoughts that inspired the ‘Derby Harris’ jacket. Cowgirl meets country!

I’ve already mentioned I love a bit of fringing, so hell, let’s go all out and have it on the pockets, across the shoulder, around the collar and down the sleeves.

But I didn’t stop there… Hail the hat! A bowler inspired shape using felted wool and matching tweed with, of course, the obligatory fringing!

The dimensions of millinery I find dramatically shows off Warp and Woof Designs fabric selection and design. It’s about achieving the complete ‘event’ look or in some cases, just accents the wardrobe, with durable and exciting staples.

Harnessing this heritage craft of hat making demonstrates how it can be drawn through traditional design to the contemporary, and using just a little bit of ingenuity, wooden hat blocks, a vibrant or quiet ‘British’ fabric you feel you can march ahead in a style to suit you.

So with the tweed phenomenon carrying on, my desire to use dynamic and versatile fabrics drives the creation to the point where I look at how to use it to give glamour as well as practicality.

So with the dullness of January and February, I wanted a little pick me up… a flash of colour from some leftover red tweed was the inspiration.

I don’t know whether you agree but there is something about Fedora styled hats that are wonderful in the fact that they suit so many people, including myself!

I guess wearing a larger rim that frames the face makes the overall look so much more sophisticated.
