At Warp & Woof Designs, we love creating bespoke pieces that our customers will feel wonderful wearing as well as confident that they have something unique, just for them. People often ask us how we decide what to design and what is involved – we love sharing the process! So, this month our blog focuses on how we take each design idea from concept all the way to creation.

Sometimes the customer knows what they want, for others it’s a picture in a magazine that they want to emulate. Occasionally it’s a replica of a dress they already have but want it in a luxurious fabric.

Certainly women have an understanding of what style fits their shape and what colours suit them best, however there is always the fear of falling into the same trap and buying the safe, know it suits me design as before. But hey, let’s go all out and try something different.

Like matching personal colouring to bold fabrics, highlighting areas like the waist for hourglass shapes. If we lengthen the skirt or dress design which particularly suits slim builds, it will elongate the legs. Go for an off-centre or diagonal styled hem, this is perfect for rounded middles. These are all design ideas we consider when beginning the process.

So first off when we get asked to design an outfit, we will discuss any design ideas they have. We will cover any preferences they may have for a certain look, and what colours they favour and importantly take their measurements.

From this we then produce a drawing and order swatches of the fabric we have chosen. This enables us to make sure the quality and colours are true to what has been viewed on our website.

Our mantra is to support British Industry and we purchase such incredible fabrics that are produced here in the UK. Some of which are:

We produce our own patterns for each and every woman. This is important as the fit needs to be perfect, whether it’s for a dress, skirt or jacket. Also, if they ever want something else, we have their measurements so we can begin working on their next Warp and Woof Design quickly.

A recent commission for a summer garden wedding was a jacket with a nod to the eponymous Chanel style. Rather than cut into the material we made a toile. This is a mock-up, which has all the measurements we have taken in a rather fetching curtain lining!!

After the fitting we made all the adjustments on the paper pattern and then cut out the fabric. This is then tacked together, before booking a 2nd fitting with the client where we re-tweak if necessary.

Finally, there is the 3rd fitting to check adjustments, before the final sewing. This can include adding pockets, fringing & fitting linings along with the Warp and Woof label.

There is nothing like the joy of a bespoke item with the added benefit that no-one will have anything like it!!

Paws For Thought

My foray onto the catwalk at Warwick Racecourse Fashion in the Field Event.

Me & my BDF Lula were asked to do a spot of modelling and were told to go on the ‘catwalk’ – that’ll be fun I thought… lots of cats to chase! But when I realised what it was I had a bit of ‘stage fright’, although my BDF Lula seemed a natural – anyway I think everyone liked us and my Dad said “it was great having all the young fillies coming over to pat us”!
