Spring has sprung and along with the flowers poking their colourful heads up and enjoying the sunshine it also is the start of the wedding season. This year I have been invited to a city location wedding in Toronto, coupled with a quick trip to NYC for a catch up with old friends. Of course my double dilemma is not just what to wear for the special day but also for exploring and touring New York.
Weather in Canada in June can be either spectacularly hot, (I know this as my sister lived there for many years) or it can be very similar to our own early summer days here in Blightly… cold and slightly damp with the threat of warm spells. This makes layers a fantastic option.
We all want to dress in something memorable however the cost of an outfit that can only be worn once or best twice is an expensive outlay, but I think I’ve cracked it!
I’m going to pick a strong colour from the multitude of threads in the Gilet made from Linton Tweeds and then design and make a silk wraparound dress in a block colour to match, using Beckford Silk. I’m teetering towards aqua or minty green currently but from the colours in the fringing I could go all out and pick orange!!
Whatever the colour combination of this two piece, it will bring vibrancy and hopefully sophistication for the wedding day, plus elegance and style when teaming the dress with a casual jacket for an evening in New York.
Family weddings always give me the urge to pop on a fascinator or a hat. The only downside is transporting it when travelling on a plane, it is the proverbial pain in the rear. So I’m very tempted to see what Louise Pocock, Chipping Campden Milliners can do! I am thinking of a small side of head ensemble using some of the leftover material from the Gilet with a feather detachable accessory . It will save me carrying that hat box through the airport and eliminate the risk of leaving it behind in my excitement to join the family and friends that are already there!!
To finish my outfit I need to think about what shoes to wear! Whilst I have plenty of pairs of black court shoes, sandals and wedges I fancy something bespoke. Thankfully my memory whirred into action and I remembered an amazingly talented young woman called Inanna Bespoke shoes who hand painted shoes to match outfits, her eclectic designs and ability to produce exquisite detail is something of great beauty.
So once the wedding festivities are over and we have said our goodbyes to the Canadian side of the family we start our jaunt up to New York. A quick hop on the plane and 1 hour later NY here we come. I’ve already requested and sent to my friends ‘my Must Do list’.
For our first outing I am going to pack a pair of black tailored trousers, white shirt and flat leather loafers for my visit to the Guggenheim Museum. It’s always been on my wish list to meander through the gallery marvelling at the extraordinary skill and abilities of such sublime artists soaking in the ambience of such an iconic building while extending my artistic horizons and inspiring my designs.
As we are there only a few days I cannot resist another favourite haunt of mine, the Meatpacking District. An area chock-a-block with great shopping experiences including the eponymous Diane von Furstenberg boutique, restaurants galore and the incredible High Line; A disused overland rail track converted to offer views across Manhattan, Hudson River & Ground Zero. With stunning gardens and art installations like the Brick House, a sixteen-foot-tall bronze bust of a black woman whose torso is contained within a skirt of clay, it’s positioning offers a sharp contrast to the disparate elements of the architectural landscape around her.
Comfort is definitely required for this excursion, so I’ll be wearing a grey silk shirt, a pair of white jeans with the Highgrove Linton Tweed Gilet. And then later, when we are weary and in need of some pick-me-up cocktails we will head for the rooftop terrace at the Standard Hotel Lebain. I can then slip on our silk wrap-around dress, the Hollywood Beckford Dress & match with a coordinating pashmina and strappy sandals for a bit of evening glamour.
Paws For Thought
I’m Mabel, a Tibetan Terrier who you will see frequently on Warp and Woof posts, I enjoy a spot of modelling and today I am sporting the Cheltenham Jacket in honour of the race days past and present that we have, and are going to be attending. My waterproof jacket is keeping my fur nice and dry and almost mud free whilst I run around making new friends with these huge ‘Dogs’ I keep seeing. There seems to be a breed called ‘horses’ which is new to me but they are rather friendly and they seem to quite like me… Well I haven’t been kicked yet!
